It all started with an idea.

While getting an arm tattoo from Jake Bertelsen—an incredible artist who settled in northwest Montana after years in Portland, Oregon—our conversation turned to the salve he was using. Over the years, Jake had tried countless tattoo balms, each with its own flaws. Some contained questionable ingredients, others lacked transparency, and many simply didn’t perform the way artists needed them to. They melted too easily, blurred the tattoo surface, or failed to properly soothe and reduce inflammation.

Jake wanted something different. He wanted a salve that was 100% natural, free from petroleum byproducts, mineral oils, and synthetic additives—something that would deeply nourish the skin while providing incredible healing properties. A formula that wouldn’t just sit on the skin but would actively support the tattooing process and optimize healing afterward.

Being the kind of person who loves a challenge, I told Jake I was willing to create the perfect salve. And so, we embarked on a mission—two and a half years of relentless research, testing, and fine-tuning. We wanted a formula that wouldn’t melt or drip on contact with the skin, that preserved the sharpness of the tattoo, and that had powerful anti-inflammatory properties to minimize swelling and allow artists to work more precisely. After countless trials, critiques, and refinements, we finally had it.

That first salve was just the beginning.

As we developed ETHOS.SKIN, we realized that true tattoo aftercare—and skin health in general—required a more comprehensive approach. Cleansing, hydration, and repair all play a crucial role, so we expanded our vision beyond just the perfect salve. We created gentle, pH-balanced soaps that cleanse without stripping the skin, ensuring fresh tattoos are properly cared for. We developed deeply nourishing serums designed to support healing, boost hydration, and enhance long-term tattoo vibrancy.
